Florida Gators sophomore quarterback Feleipe Franks performed extremely well in the 2018 season opener against Charleston Southern. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 219 yards and five touchdowns.

That’s a great sign, but with much tougher competition coming soon, it doesn’t necessarily foreshadow more good things to come.

This week, Florida quarterback coach Brian Johnson discussed the keys, citing confidence and routine, towards Franks continuing his development.

“I think the biggest thing is fall in love with your routine,” Johnson said in a video posted to YouTube by Fighting Gators. “A patterned, set routine each and every week of how you get prepared for games. And it starts out here on the practice field.”

Johnson also called confidence “critical” towards any quarterback’s success, but especially a young one such as Franks.

Last season, Franks didn’t receive the chance to light it up against a cupcake because Florida opened the season with Michigan. He didn’t play much in that season opener, but he did later in September, as the Gators struggled to find quality quarterback play.

Even if it came against an FCS school, the Week 1 performance could give Franks the confidence he needs to play well during the SEC schedule. Franks will look to build upon that confidence in Week 2 against Kentucky.
