Jon Sumrall certainly moves and sounds like a football coach.
The new Gators head coach was mic’d up during Florida’s spring practice session this week, giving fans an up close and personal look at how he runs his practices. The former Tulane coach isn’t just standing to the side holding a clipboard — he’s up and interacting often with his team, coaching them through the big and small aspects of improving their games.
Sumrall wasn’t treating practice like a drill sergeant, either. He walked up to a few players and gave them a classic, “what’s up, sweetheart?” a few times throughout this video. Check out the extended cut here:
Florida needed a new approach at head coach, that much really isn’t up for debate. While it’s true the Gators schedule was tough during Billy Napier’s tenure, the amount of talent on Florida’s squad simply should have produced better results. Sumrall looks to change that.
Sumrall spent 2 seasons as Troy’s head coach before spending 2 seasons as Tulane’s head coach. Across that time he won 3 conference championship games and took the Green Wave to the College Football Playoff. He was also named the Sun Belt Head Coach of the Year in 2022 and boasts a career HC record of 43-12.
So you’re telling me there’s a chance? Florida has a 9% chance to win the SEC title next season, per Kalshi. Here’s a look at the rest of the odds:
