Florida State fan perfectly sums up Seminoles’ first quarter vs. Memphis

Florida State had nearly as many yards lost to penalties in the first quarter against Memphis on Saturday as it did yards gained on offense.

The Seminoles were flagged 3 times for 20 yards. They gained 30 total yards. And ESPN’s camera crew caught one particular fan in the crowd early on with a simple but succinct sign hanging around his neck.

Florida State turned the football over on its second offensive snap of the game. Tailback Roydell Williams got popped and fumbled the ball, which Memphis recovered and turned into a field goal.

FSU went 3-and-out on its next possession — a drive that lost 3 net yards because of penalties. On the third offensive possession of the game, FSU was successful on 1 of 5 plays and punted away despite having an explosive 24-yard rush on the drive.

On third down of Florida State’s fourth drive, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was picked off. It was his first incompletion in 6 pass attempts to that point, but his previous 5 completions had totaled 7 yards.

“Cooked” might be too kind to the Florida State offense. Memphis turned that second turnover into an 8-play, 65-yard touchdown march to take a 10-0 lead in Tallahassee. FSU closed as a 6.5-point favorite over the Tigers at ESPN Bet.

FSU opened the season in the AP top 10 but has become just the third team in the modern poll era (since 1989) to go from preseason top-10 to unranked in the first regular-season poll. The Seminoles are looking to avoid what would be just a second 0-3 start to a season since 1976.
