DJ Lagway won’t be a part of Jon Sumrall‘s plans at Florida after a pair of seasons with the Gators. The former five-star recruit is now mulling his next steps after entering the transfer portal.
Could that future see him remain within the borders of the Sunshine State?
According to On3’s Matt Laserre and Pete Nakos, Florida State is reportedly “in contact” with Lagway as it looks to bounce back from what’s been a rough past couple of years. The Seminoles are in the market for a new quarterback after Tommy Castellanos opted to declare for the NFL Draft instead of seeking a fifth season of eligibility.
The 2026 campaign, Mike Norvell‘s seventh in Tallahassee, will begin with him squarely on the hot seat. Again. The Noles opened 2025 with a 3-0 mark — including a season-opening win over Alabama — and were a Top 10 team at one point, but went just 2-7 the rest of the way. Regardless, Norvell received a vote of confidence from FSU AD Michael Alford.
Norvell went 23-4 in 2022 and 2023 combined. He’s 7-17 since. With the Seminoles looking to return to national prominence, they’ve apparently reached out to Lagway, who will be in high demand and hoping to boost his own status in his junior season.
Lagway threw for 2,264 yards and 16 touchdowns but added 14 interceptions. After games of 456 and 305 yards as a freshman in 2024, he failed to throw over 298 yards as a sophomore.
