Florida State makes wrong kind of history in Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech

Last year was a dream for Florida State, until it wasn’t. First, the Seminoles were left out of the College Football Playoff, and then they were blown out 63-3 by Georgia in the Orange Bowl.
With the season kicking off against Georgia Tech in Week 0, the Seminoles were looking to put all that in the past. However, the team made the kind of history teams don’t want to in the 24-21 loss to the Yellow Jackets.
Week 0 has been a part of the college football world since 2002, and 11 ranked teams have played in this week. The previous 10 teams all won their games, making the Seminoles the first ranked team to lose.
Dating back to 2002, when “Week 0” became a thing, no ranked team had ever lost.
Florida State just became the first.
Ranked teams were 11-0 until today.

Also, according to ESPN Stats & Info, the Seminoles were 17-1 when playing an unranked team as a top-10 team in an opener. Their previous loss was to a Southern Mississippi team that had Brett Favre as its starter.
Per our elite @ESPNStatsInfogrouo: Florida State was 17-1 in season openers as a Top-10 team against unranked opponents, with the lone loss coming in 1989 against Southern Miss. Haynes King joins Brett Favre in pulling the rare upset.

If this was last season, the Seminoles would be in a very difficult spot when it comes to the College Football Playoff conversations. However, with the new 12-team system, there is still a lot to play for in Tallahassee. The loss makes next week’s home game against Boston College even more important, as the team needs to avoid an 0-2 start in conference play.
