Former Alabama defensive back Xavier McKinney has suffered a rookie season setback. The New York Giants announced Wednesday that McKinney has a fracture in his left foot that will require surgery.
According to Giants.com Senior Writer/Editor Michael Eisen the surgery is scheduled for later Wednesday afternoon at Hospital for Special Surgery where foot specialist Dr. Martin O’Malley will perform the procedure.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network shared that McKinney’s injury “is a broken fifth metatarsal. That’s the one on the outside of the foot, where the Jones fracture happens.” He added that McKinney will likely be sidelined 2-3 months.
McKinney earned first-team All-SEC honors in his final season at Alabama and was selected No. 36 overall by the Giants in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
McKinney appeared to like his fit in New York and be adjusting well to the NFL, recently noting how first-year coach Joe Judge reminded him of playing for Nick Saban.
“When he discussed some of his rules and then how he wanted things to be handled and how he wanted us to be as a team, it was almost like a mirror version of how it was at Bama for me,” he said. “As far as that, it was an easy adjustment for me. I’ve already been in this type of system.”
Judge was an Alabama special teams assistant under Saban from 2009-11.
