Former Alabama fullback Kevin Turner died on Thursday morning.
AL.com reported that Turner, 46, died at his residence in Vestavia Hills, Ala., after a battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was diagnosed in 2010.
Turner played for Alabama from 1988-91 before being selected in the third round by the New England Patriots in the 1992 NFL Draft. He played there for three seasons before playing his final five with the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to AL.com, the Prattville, Ala., native was placed on hospice two days ago and friends and family were present at the time of his passing.
Alabama athletic director Bill Battle released a statement on Turner’s passing.
“The Crimson Tide family lost a true warrior today with the passing of Kevin Turner, our former fullback who was one of the captains of our football team in 1991. Kevin’s spirit, his toughness, and his courage in life and on the football field inspired us all. Kevin and his family are in our thoughts and prayers on this sad day.”
