Jim Fuller, who was an assistant head coach and player at Alabama, has died at the age of 76.
AL.com’s Creg Stephenson reports that Fuller’s wife Marilyn, told Rick Karle of Birmingham’s Channel 13 News, that the former Jacksonville State head coach has been battling COVID-19. His wife says that he was vaccinated and had returned to his home in Texas for hospice care.
Jacksonville State confirmed Fuller’s death and released a statement:
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Coach Jim Fuller,” said JSU athletics director Greg Seitz in a statement to the media. “He was instrumental in several conference championships during his time at Jacksonville State, both as a coach and as an administrator. He was a true Gamecock that was loved by so many in our community, alumni, and fan base. He will be sorely missed.”
Fuller played tackle for Alabama back in 1964 and 65. He then returned to the school to be an assistant under head coaches Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, and Gene Stallings.
From 1977-83, Fuller was the head coach of the Gamecocks leading them to a 54-25 record with four Gulf South Conference championships and five NCAA Division II playoff appearances.
He then returned to the school in 2003 and was the athletic director until he retired in 2008.
