Pete Golding has been a big topic of discussion among Alabama fans over the last couple of seasons.

Golding’s Alabama defense hasn’t finished in the top 10 in scoring defense during his tenure. In fact, the Tide finished 18th in scoring defense in 2021, allowing opponents 20.1 points per game.

So, naturally, Alabama fans have taken out some frustration on the defensive coordinator. However, former Alabama standout Phil Mathis came to Golding’s defense at the Senior Bowl.

“I feel like Pete (Golding) is a great coach and does a lot of things to put us in great position,” Mathis said about his defensive coordinator to JOX’s Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic. “People got to understand that he’s not the on out there playing. We got to take it to the field. That man give us the call and sometimes all it takes is one guy to not do his job and the play can unfold. So, I think people got to realize that man is a great coach. He puts us in great position. We just have to go out there and execute. All it takes is one mess up and the play can open up for the offense. He’s a great coach. Nobody understands all of the work he puts into his job. He loves it.”

Golding will be coordinating Alabama’s defense for the 4th consecutive season in 2022.
