Former Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams has had a tumultuous season off the field. Williams was facing a possible warrant after a traffic stop in October and was then served a suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance-Enhancing Substances policy.
Williams served his suspension without appealing and has since returned to the Lions. Now, Williams’ legal situation appears to have been resolved as well. Per reports, the WR will not be charged with a crime following the incident.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy released the following statement regarding the decision not to charge Williams:
“We have looked at this case thoroughly and objectively. We did not consider that Mr. Williams is a Detroit professional athlete in our decision making. We have charged Detroit area athletes before and would not have hesitated to do so again if the facts of this case could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” Worthy said in a statement, via the Detroit Free Press. “When it comes to charging decisions, we do not take into consideration who the potential defendant is, how much power and influence they have, or how beloved they may be. We deal with the facts and the law only.”
Notably, Williams was heard in the original dashcam footage telling the officer that he plays for the Detroit Lions. The prosecutor’s comments are a response to those who felt the athlete got preferential treatment.
When on the field, Williams has been dynamic in 2024. The Alabama product has caught 29 passes for 602 yards and 4 TDs and has already set career highs in each category.
Before going to Detroit, Williams starred for Alabama. The WR caught 79 passes for 1,572 yards and 15 TDs in his lone season with the Crimson Tide.
