Former Auburn defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding is headed west. Washington State has hired Schmedding as its new DC, the university announced on Thursday.

“Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team, and truly understands our region of the country,” Cougars head coach Jake Dickert said in a release. “Jeff will put his stamp on our defense and I can’t wait to work alongside him in continuing the foundation of defensive football we have built here at WSU. I am excited to welcome Jeff and his family back to the Palouse”

Schmedding followed Bryan Harsin to Auburn from Boise State, where he was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. For the 2021 season, Schmedding was Auburn’s linebackers coach, while Derek Mason was the defensive coordinator. Following Mason’s departure, Harsin promoted Schmedding to defensive coordinator for the 2022 season.

After Harsin’s firing, Schmedding was the only former Boise State assistant who remained on the staff of interim head coach Cadillac Williams. Hugh Freeze did not retain Schmedding, hiring Ron Roberts, formerly of Baylor, to be Auburn’s defensive coordinator.

At Washington State, Schmedding replaces former defensive coordinator Brian Ward, who left for the same position at Arizona State.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news.
