Former Auburn defensive lineman Byron Cowart is back on an NFL team. He signed with a new team on Thursday shortly after being released, per AL.com’s Mark Inabinett.

Cowart will be joining the Houston Texans. He previously signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was released on May 10. In Houston, he’ll fill a need after a hamstring injury sent defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth to the injured reserve list.

Cowart spent the first few seasons of his college career at Auburn. 247Sports rated him as a 5-star recruit from the 2015 class. Cowart was the No. 1 SDE and No. 3 prospect from Florida. Cowart eventually transferred to Maryland for his final collegiate season.

He was taken by the New England Patriots in the 2019 NFL Draft. He stayed with the team until he was waived on July 22, 2022.

Cowart was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts the following day.

One of the more productive seasons of Cowart’s career was in 2020 with New England. He played in 14 games with 1 sack, 27 total tackles, and 3 tackles for loss.

Last season with the Colts he accounted for 12 total tackles and 2 tackles for loss in 17 games played.

The Texans also waived TE Eric Tomlinson and made things official with CB Shaquill Griffin on Thursday.
