Former Auburn K Cody Parkey will be looking for a new NFL team. The Chicago Bears have reportedly decided to release Parkey when the NFL “year” begins next month.
Chicago’s season ended when Parkey’s potential go-ahead field goal was blocked against the Phildelphia Eagles down 16-15 with 10 seconds left. It resulted in a dreaded “double doink.”
Parkey didn’t help his cause with Bears fans when he went on the “Today” show. Media members saw it as a “pity tour” and called the hosts’ praise for Parkey excessive.
But don’t feel too bad for the former Tiger. He’ll still be collecting $3.5 million from the Bears, which was guaranteed in his contract. A fresh start is likely in the best interest for both parties. Parkey is expected to be be able to find another opportunity in 2019.
Parkey played at Auburn from 2010-13. His NFL career began in 2014 when he joined the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent.
The #Bears have decided to release K Cody Parkey at the start of the league year, sources say. A fresh start is welcomed by both parties, and the Pro Bowler will likely find work quickly. He’s still due $3.5M guaranteed on his 2019 contract.
