Long live the dab!
Former Auburn QB Cam Newton, now a star with the Carolina Panthers, wants the NFL (sometimes jokingly referred to as the “No Fun League”) to lighten up a little when it comes to end zone celebrations.
Newton told ESPN.com that players are entertainers, so they should be allowed to entertain fans after scoring a touchdown or making a big play:
“I really can’t talk on their ratings,” Newton said Tuesday as he prepared for a Thursday night game against the Atlanta Falcons. “But in some way, shape, form or fashion, we are entertainers. Our influence ranks second-to-none at this time of the year.”
Newton added that, with all the punishment players’ bodies take, they are owed an occasional lengthy celebration:
“And if scoring a touchdown, getting a sack, getting a win … let alone all of that bottled up and staying here until 10 at night and here at 6 in the morning, all of that energy that you put, spending time away from your family, all of that bottled up and being able to do exactly what you planned and foresaw yourself doing, you are owed something.”
Newton and the Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons in a primetime game on Thursday night. When the lights shine the brightest on Newton, he tends to take his entertainment responsibilities a little farther.
Check out Newton’s celebrations at 8:25 p.m. on NBC or the NFL Network.
