Kamryn Pettway was known during his career at Auburn as a punishing back who often turned the lights out on opponents at the end of games.
He played in 28 games with 10 starts from 2014-17, and Auburn was 5-0 in games when he rushed for more than 150 yards. Pettway had a memorable 2016 season when he rushed for 1,224 yards and was named first team All-SEC. Now Pettway has taken the next step in his career.
The Montgomery, Alabama native, who played at Prattville, was recently hired at Central-Phenix City to coach fullbacks and running backs this season, OAnow.com reported. Former Prattville head coach Jamey DuBose is the current head coach at Phenix City and missed coaching Pettway in high school.
“It means a lot to me, just to have this opportunity with a great program and a great head coach. I didn’t get a chance to play with coach DuBose at Prattville, so it means a lot now that he’s brought me onto this coaching staff,” Pettway said. “I was teaching and coaching last year at Park Crossing. I just wanted to leave, get away from Montgomery, do something different with my life and move my family. I felt like this was a great opportunity for me as well as my family.”
Pettway had a brief career with the Minnesota Vikings, and then played in the National Arena league before he started his coaching career at Park Crossing.
“He’s a young guy, so he can communicate well with the players,” DuBose said. “He’s able to give them insight, too, running back-wise. He’s able to tell them some things that’s going to help them. Anytime you’ve got an opportunity to get a guy with the knowledge he has and a guy that’s a young guy wanting to get into coaching, you’ve got to take it.”
