As the SEC has truly become Alabama and everybody else in 2016, there’s a lot of talk about the pending demise of the conference in college football.

Former commissioner Mike Slive isn’t buying it.

“There are 11 bowl-eligible teams with five or six in the Top 25,” Slive told AL.com’s Joseph Goodman. “A team is ranked No.1 in the College Football Playoff standings, and I think Commissioner Sankey said it very well when he said the expectations for the SEC are extraordinary, and earned.”

After 13 years as SEC commissioner, Slive retired prior to the beginning of the 2015 season. Slive’s tenure included the SEC’s run of seven consecutive BCS championships from 2006-12.

Slive will be in Atlanta this weekend taking part in the conference’s celebration of the 25th SEC Championship Game.
