Rapidly unfolding scandals like the Urban Meyer situation at Ohio State can send shockwaves throughout college football. If one were to wager on which active coach is most unlikely to ever be tangled up in a massive scandal, Mark Richt would likely be one of the safest bets.

Former Georgia punter Drew Butler recently reflected on Twitter that with all that’s currently going on, he’s more appreciative than ever that he played for Richt.

“The single best thing about Coach Richt was that the guy you saw on TV, talking to the media, on gameday – was the exact same person he was every single day,” Butler wrote in his tweet.

Three years later, Richt’s parting from Georgia appears to be one of the rare college football divorces that worked out best for everyone. Richt appears to have recharged his batteries, so to speak, coaching at his alma mater and achieving success in the ACC. Georgia has taken a giant step forward under Kirby Smart, winning the 2017 SEC championship and coming one play away from winning the national championship. And it must be mentioned that while Richt was a good recruiter, Smart is recruiting at an even higher level and ensuring UGA will be the division’s most talented team for the foreseeable future.

Georgia fans can certainly appreciate that the Dawgs never faced a major scandal in Richt’s 15 seasons as head coach.
