Jacob Eason comes to Georgia surrounded by very high expectations. One former Bulldogs QB knows all about that.
Matt Stafford, also a five-star QB, came in as the top-rated pro-style QB in his class. He lived up to the hype, eventually becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
However, Stafford told Chip Towers of DawgNation.com that Eason likely comes to Athens with more in his tool belt.
“I wasn’t very good,” said Stafford, who led the SEC in passing yards by a wide margin in his junior season with 3,459. “He’s a super-talented kid. As far as the comparisons go, everybody’s their own player. I’m sure he’s bigger than I am, can probably throw it farther than I can and all that kind of stuff. I’m just happy for him to get an opportunity to play here. It’s a special place to play. I know he’ll have a great time playing and being a student-athlete here like I was. I’m just happy for him, happy for the team, happy for the whole program.”
Stafford and Eason also share another similarity as both come to Georgia from miles away. Stafford came from Dallas, Texas, while Eason has trekked clear across the country from Lake Stevens, Wa.
Stafford says there’s a thrill in that.
“It’s a lot of fun coming from a long ways away and kind of immersing myself in Georgia and the culture and all that. I’m sure he’s going to have a good time doing it. I look forward to watching him play today. We’ll see. But I’m excited for him.”
In speaking with Towers, Stafford also discussed his time at Georgia. You can read the story in its entirety here.
