Despite having Round 1 talent, former Georgia RHP Cole Wilcox fell to Round 3 of the 2020 MLB Draft earlier this month, where he was scooped up by the San Diego Padres.

Fortunately for Wilcox, the Padres were willing to throw some big money at him to get him to sign his rookie deal.

Per MLB analyst Jim Callis, Wilcox signed for $3.3 million, which is well above the slot value of $767,800. That’s a Round 3 record, passing a contract handed out by the Padres last year:

Before the 2020 season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilcox was 3-0 in 4 stars with a 1.57 ERA. He struck out 32 batters and issued only 2 walks.

How will he fare with the Padres? Well, the minor league season is expected to be canceled, so we might have to wait a bit to see his pro debut.
