Former Georgia tight end Darnell Washington is trying to cement his place in the NFL. The massive pass-catcher is off to a good start in Week 2, scoring the first touchdown of his career.

With the Pittsburgh Steelers driving against the Denver Broncos, Washington got just open enough to catch a 5-yard pass to put the Steelers up 7-0.

Washington was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Georgia. As a rookie, Washington played a reserve role for the team. The TE caught 7 passes for 61 yards in his rookie campaign, but figures to play a larger role in his sophomore season.

Also of note, Washington’s TD catch came on a pass thrown by fellow former Georgia Bulldog Justin Fields. Fields and Washington never played together with the Bulldogs, but they could form a connection in Pittsburgh.

In Athens, Washington caught 45 passes for 774 yards and 3 TDs in 27 games. The TE intrigued NFL teams due to his massive 6’7″, 265-pound frame. Washington ended up falling to the 3rd round, where the Steelers scooped the talented prospect up. Washington mostly saw the field on special teams as a rookie, sitting behind Pat Freiermuth on the TE depth chart.

Washington’s Steelers are currently carrying a 7-0 lead over the Broncos in the 2nd quarter. The Steelers defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, so a win in Week 2 would make the team the only 2-0 squad in the AFC North.
