Though Les Miles booted Tyrann Mathieu from the team in the weeks before the 2012 season, he said during a Tuesday segment on Rich Eisen’s radio show that he was still “heartbroken” to see LSU fire his former coach Sept. 25.

Despite his short time in Baton Rouge, Mathieu needed just two years to go down as one of the best players of the Miles era. The ball-hawking defensive back was a Heisman Trophy finalist, won the Bednarik Award and was named the MVP of the 2011 SEC Championship game.

He was suspended one game during that stellar sophomore season before Miles finally kick him off the team. Mathieu entered drug rehab and was arrested for marijuana possession shortly afterward, but he has enjoyed a successful NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals.

Mathieu has maintained a good relationship with Miles despite his ugly departure from the team, so his reaction to the firing makes sense.
