An ex-Texas A&M offensive lineman has been cut by his NFL team a day before the 53-player deadline.

On Monday, the Houston Texans released Carson Smith, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Smith had signed with the Texans in the offseason as an undrafted free agent.

A 3-star recruit out of national power Southlake Carroll High School in Texas, the 6-foot-6, 320-pound Smith became a mainstay in the Aggies’ offensive line during his time in College Station, playing 12 times and gaining 4 starts as a freshman in 2017 before starting every game between 2018-2020. From his freshman season on, he started 39 games in a row and missed just 1 game in his college career. Following the 2020 season, he was named a 2nd-team All-SEC player.

Smith was part of a unit that ranked among the best in the SEC as Aggies ball-carriers recorded a league-high 5.45 yards per carry. Texas A&M also yielded 0.7 sacks a game, the lowest total in the conference.
