Former Texas A&M QB Kyle Allen in line to make first NFL start this week
Kyle Allen’s path to starting an NFL game has come rather abruptly.
After making his professional debut last week, the former Texas A&M quarterback will likely start for the Carolina Panthers in their regular-season finale against the New Orleans Saints.
Allen is next up on the Panthers’ depth chart after the team shut down starter Cam Newton for the rest of the season and placed backup Taylor Heinicke on injured reserve, a move that was reported by ESPN’S Adam Schefter.

Allen was briefly forced into action during Carolina’s 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons when Heinicke suffered an elbow injury. He completed all four of his passes for 38 yards over parts of two drives, the first of which ended with a field goal.
Allen spent the first two years of his college career with the Aggies, most notably leading the team to a 5-0 start in 2015. But he eventually lost his job and transferred to Houston before going undrafted in 2018.
Now Allen has a chance to build on his strong first showing, and a solid performance in the starting role Sunday would bode well for his NFL future.
