Many questions surround the 2025 Oregon State football team, especially on offense. They have been stuck in limbo since the collapse of the Pac-12, but they landed a massive transfer portal pickup, Maalik Murphy, after he transferred from both Texas and Duke before landing in Corvallis. He could have a chance to fix this offense for the 2025 season thoroughly after being named the starter for Week 1.

Murphy has had an interesting and winding road throughout his college career. He started his career in Texas but then transferred to Duke. He was solid at Duke last season and now finds himself in Corvallis for his junior year. On Wednesday, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Murphy will start for the Beavers in Week One against Cal.

This is not a surprise, considering how big the news of the Beavers’ landing him out of the portal was in the first place.

The 4-star recruit committed to Texas out of high school in California, but then transferred 2 seasons ago after the Longhorns made the College Football Playoff. He went to Duke and had a solid season with the Blue Devils in Manny Diaz’s first season.

Last season, Murphy recorded 2,933 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions on a 60.3% completion percentage. He also helped Duke to a 9-4 record before transferring a second time.

Murphy no doubt has the physical tools: at 6 feet 5 inches and 234 pounds, he may prove to be the type of player who can help the fanbase generate some much-needed excitement and potentially surprise some teams this season, too.
