South Carolina added another piece to its defensive puzzle on Sunday when Kansas transfer Isaiah Johnson, a former Big XII newcomer of the year in 2013, announced he would play his final season with the Gamecocks.

A top playmaker in the Jayhawks’ secondary the past two seasons, Johnson made 148 tackles and six interceptions in 24 starts. The Cary, N.C. native signed with Western Carolina out of high school in 2011 but took a medical redshirt before transferring to Iowa Western Junior College where he record eight picks and won a national championship in 2012.
Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound safety, has a great opportunity to fight for a starting job during fall camp on the Gamecocks’ new-look defense. He informed first-year co-coordinator Jon Hoke of his decision this weekend and said he will not take a visit to Louisville that was originally planned.
He’s expected to graduate from Kansas in May and will be eligible immediately as a grad student with the Gamecocks.
