Kenny McKinley, one of the most beloved players in the history of South Carolina football, will be inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday.

McKinley’s father, Ken, will accept the honor of his behalf during a ceremony at Williams-Brice Stadium. The former All-SEC receiver died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2010 as a member of the Denver Broncos at age 23.

“Kenny was one of my favorite players of all time,” Spurrier said Wednesday, according to The State. “He really was. Man, he could play. He could catch. He was tough, courageous, really an outstanding player. We all loved him, and he was tough, never complained about anything.”

During his career in Columbia, McKinley set school records for catches (207) and yards (2,782) and caught a pass in a record 43 consecutive games.

“We are just honored,” Ken McKinley told The State. “Not only was he a great athlete, but he was an excellent son and a great human being. We really miss him, but the Gamecock family always makes us feel so warm. It’s just a privilege.”

McKinley had several memorable games at South Carolina, including a 14-catch, 151-yard outing at Neyland Stadium in 2007 and a game-clinching 22-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Syvelle Newton on a trick play at Kentucky as a sophomore.
