Garrett Nussmeier and LSU had arguably the most impressive win of the weekend, when the Tigers went to Clemson and won a 17-10 game between two top 10 teams.

It was a statement win for LSU, as the Tigers had lost 5 consecutive season-opening games before the Week 1 win.

Nussmeier did exactly what his team needed to win the game, and his performance was rewarded as he won the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week.

It wasn’t the best statistical game of his career, as he threw for 232 yards and 1 touchdown. The biggest thing he showed in Week 1 was the ability to take what the defense was giving and not make the big mistake of turning the ball over.

In LSU’s losses last seasons, Nussmeier had the tendency to throw costly interceptions. LSU showed on Saturday night that its defense may be a lot better than it has been the past couple of seasons. If that is the case, the LSU offense won’t necessarily have to put up huge points to be in games.

It was a statement win for Nussmeier, as the Tigers look like a true national title contender while he is now arguably the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
