Garrett Nussmeier entered the season as a Heisman Trophy candidate, as the LSU offense was expected to be among the best in all of college football. The Tigers have been one of the best teams in the country, but it has been because a surprising improvement by the defense.
Nussmeier once again struggled on Saturday, as the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Ole Miss by a score of 24-19. The senior quarterback finished 21-of-34 for 197 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. More than 25% of his yardage came on one play — a 50-yard pass in the first quarter.
Brian Kelly mentioned a couple weeks ago that Nussmeier was dealing with an injury, but Nussmeier declined answering any questions about his health after the game.
“I’m not answering any questions about my health right now,” Nussmeier said. “Right now I’m just frustrated about the loss, watch the tape and find ways to get better.”
When Kelly brought that up two weeks ago, he said that Nussmeier needed some time to rest to get better. Luckily for him, the Tigers have a bye next week, which could allow him to get right.
Even with the Tigers loss on Saturday, LSU can still reach the College Football Playoff if it can turn things around in time. The Tigers will be back in action on Oct. 11 against South Carolina.
