Garrett Nussmeier and the LSU Tigers are entering the season with huge expectations as the team is looking to finally break through under coach Brian Kelly.
Nussmeier is a Heisman Trophy favorite at the quarterback position and has the talent at the receiver position that should make LSU one of the best passing attacks in all of college football. While Nussmeier is hearing all the talk about what type of individual season that he could have this year, he said there was only one reason why he wanted to come back to Baton Rouge.
“I didn’t want to watch anybody else be the guy that leads LSU to the national championship,” Nussmeier told Marty Smith and Ryan McGee of ESPN. “LSU means the world to me. Louisiana means the world to me. Also, my faith helped me so much during that decision process. Same reason why I stayed when everybody was telling me to transfer. God brought me to LSU for a reason. I always wanted to win a national championship here.”

Nussmeier had a very good year in 2024, when he threw for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The Tigers started out 6-1 last year, but lost consecutive games against Texas A&M and Alabama to be eliminated from the College Football Playoff. In those 2 games, he threw nearly half (5) of his interceptions, and he will look to bounce back from those performances in big games.
LSU is known to play a tough non-conference schedule, and this season is no different as the Tigers travel to Clemson to take on a team led by another Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, Cade Klubnik. While Nussmeier is all about winning the national championship, a win over Clemson would be a great start for both his individual and team success.
