Former Alabama and Texas A&M coach Gene Stallings joined “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 in Mobile, Ala., Friday to “talk about the Texas A&M Board of Regents, his health and the Alabama Crimson Tide,” according to a report from AL.com.
Stallings reportedly said he thought it was a mistake for A&M regent Tony Buzbee to publicly come out against Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin. Stallings is a former member of the A&M Board of Regents.
“Anytime we get involved with that, we sort of step out of bounds just a little bit, not that we don’t have the authority to do it,” Stallings said Friday. “That puts tremendous pressure on Sumlin. I think it was a mistake … I think it was a mistake by the athletic director to say winning eight games wasn’t enough.
“It’s unfortunate, but it’s part of the game,” Stallings said. “Rank has its privilege. It’s not the board of regents’ job to please the coach. It’s the coach’s job to please the regents. That’s the way the system works.”
Stallings, who is recovering from a minor stroke, said he’s “doing fine” health-wise.
“I just had a little ole’ setback. The main thing is I can’t do anything,” he said. “I have to watch other people do work on the ranch and that’s frustrating more than anything. Physically, I’m feeling pretty good.”
Stallings noted that he plans to attend at least a couple of Alabama games this season. He believes Alabama and Clemson are still the two best teams in the country, and apparently is giving the nod to the Crimson Tide.
