After spending 2021 as a senior analyst on the Georgia football staff following his firing as South Carolina head coach, Will Muschamp was promoted to co-defensive coordinator during the offseason. He’ll share DC duties with Glenn Schumann following Dan Lanning’s departure to become head coach at Oregon.
Muschamp’s hot temper and sideline demeanor, of course, has been the subject of video clips and memes for years. That reputation has earned him the nickname “Coach Boom” due to his excitement and celebrations after big plays by his defensive units over the years.
Apparently Bulldogs defensive back Christopher Smith wasn’t aware of that nickname before Thursday, though.
“I hadn’t heard about that. I’m gonna tease him about that,” he said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Sarah K. Spencer. “We always see old clips of him going crazy at (South Carolina) and Florida. We send ’em to him & he always says he’s matured since then.”
While Muschamp’s 2 stints as a head coach failed — first at Florida and later at South Carolina — he’s known as one of the top defensive minds in college football. Can he help guide his alma mater to a 2nd straight national championship?
