The Georgia Bulldogs have lost in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals each of the past 2 seasons. Gunner Stockton has been their quarterback for both of those games. For the Dawgs to return to the top of the sport, a notable alum believes he must step up his game.

On the latest episode of the Mac & Murray CFB Show, former ESPN analyst and Georgia player David Pollack expressed belief that the Bulldogs have “no chance” of winning a championship unless Stockton improves. However, the focus for Pollack seems to reside in the mental aspects of the position more than the physical ones.

“If Gunner Stockton’s the same quarterback he was a year ago, Georgia has no chance to win a [national title]. They have no chance,” Pollack said. “I saw him grow. I saw him put more touch on the football… it’s more personality driven with Gunner Stockton than anything. He’s a kid that doesn’t want to mess up… wants to be perfect. Those are hard things, man.”

Perhaps Pollack’s analysis can be compared to a coach playing not to lose instead of playing to win. When someone is trying to be perfect as a quarterback, they’re not going to regularly take shots downfield. That forces you to sustain long drives to score points, which shrinks your margin for error. Georgia’s closer-than-expected games against Auburn and Florida are great examples of this.

Stockton’s performance against Tennessee — his only 300-yard passing game — shows he’s capable of letting it rip when the moment calls for it. If he can find a happy middle between full-on gunslinger and his current conservative nature, the Bulldogs will have a great chance at reclaiming their throne.
