Georgia Tech roasted for giving out rings after 7-6 campaign
Georgia Tech handed out some flashy rings recently. The only problem: Georgia Tech didn’t do much to warrant a ring in 2024.
Rings to commemorate a season are typically handed out to champions, be it conference or otherwise. Teams will give out rings for major bowl victories. Sometimes, teams give rings merely to commemorate a season. If you fall into the latter camp, it’s usually best not to show them off on social media. That will get your program roasted by all corners of the internet.
Georgia Tech went 7-6 during the 2024 campaign. It played in the Birmingham Bowl against Vanderbilt — the bowl logo adorns one side of the ring — but lost that game by 8 points. They went 5-0 at home, and that record is honored on the other side of the ring. Final scorelines against Florida State and Miami are engraved on the inside of the ring.
Normally, beating the Hurricanes and the Seminoles in a season would be a good sign. The last time Georgia Tech beat both in the same regular season was 2008. The Yellow Jackets beat Miami at home when the Hurricanes were ranked No. 4.
But Florida State was awful in 2024. The Seminoles went 2-10, enduring their worst football season since 1974. When Georgia Tech beat them by 3 points in Dublin to begin the year, FSU was ranked in the top 10. But 3 straight losses to begin the year proved quickly that Florida State was massively overvalued.
As one would expect, Georgia Tech caught some flak on social media for highlighting that win and handing out rings for a seemingly average season.
