Georgia’s CFP ranking, absence from bracket draws reaction on social media

Georgia would not be a College Football Playoff team if the postseason began after Week 11’s results.

Following the loss to Ole Miss, UGA dropped to No. 12 in the new CFP selection committee top 25. While the new Playoff features a 12-team field, it includes the 5 highest-ranked conference champions. Under the current rankings, No. 13 Boise State would get the final spot as the Mountain West champion.

There’s certainly no reason to panic in Athens. Georgia would be sure to move up from No. 12 if it defeats No. 7 Tennessee on Saturday. There figures to be plenty more movement over the next 4 weeks before Selection Sunday (3 regular-season games plus conference championships).

Still, it was quite a shock for many fans to see a 12-team field that would not include the Bulldogs. Since UGA’s first Playoff berth in 2017, Kirby Smart’s teams have regularly contended for the national championship, including back-to-back titles in 2021 and ’22. Georgia began the 2024 season ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25.

Here are some of the reactions to Georgia’s latest CFP ranking:

We’ll find out next week if Georgia’s absence from the field was a 1-week deal or something to prepare for in December.
