Mark Webb is about as experienced as it gets for Georgia. The senior from Philadelphia said it took him a while to learn multiple positions in the Kirby Smart defense, but that, “it makes you smart, you understand the defense.”
Webb has also noticed an improvement among all the defensive backs, even though he primarily plays the STAR position, he’s played cornerback, nickel, dime and safety. He explained in a recent Zoom call with reporters how the Georgia defense reaches for higher standards even coming off of a strong season.
“You’ve got to come in and want to get better,” he said. “You’ve got to have that it factor to want to be on the field and want to make plays when it’s time to make plays. As a leader of the defense, I feel like it’s me to come out and determine the energy of that day. If my energy’s down, what can the young guys learn from me. I just come out there and bring the energy and hope that day is going to be a great day.”
Those young guys include Jalen Kimber and Major Burns, who are part of an overall unit that has made a big jump from last year, according to Webb.
“They all come to practice every day,” Webb said. “They come every day, consistently, always get better. All our young DBs they’re learning fast, I’m learning with them as I’m trying to teach them and try to give them the ropes. I have fun being out there just trying to teach them. So it’s definitely fun.”
For himself, Webb wouldn’t say where he feels most comfortable.
“I play a lot of different positions, but I really feel comfortable everywhere,” he said. “It really took a long time for me to say that but I really feel comfortable anywhere Coach Smart puts me. It took about a year to learn this one spot, but I feel like over time and with meetings and things, I can play anything on the field.”
