Glen Powell shouts out Major Applewhite, explains why he grew up a Texas fan
Glen Powell is an actor who is currently launching a sports comedy series on TV called Chad Powers, which is supposed to be entertaining but isn’t quite real life.
As for Powell’s love for the Texas Longhorns football program, well, that’s as real as it gets. The 36-year-old celebrity was born in Austin, so he’s legit, and he bleeds burnt orange just like Matthew McConaughey does. Powell was seen on the Texas sideline a month ago during the Longhorns’ huge Week 1 battle at Ohio State, and on Tuesday he made an appearance on ESPN’s College Football Live to talk about why his upbringing as a Texas fan has had staying power.
When it comes to rooting for Texas football, there is no script, there is no playing a certain character. When he cheers for Texas, including former Longhorns quarterback Major Applewhite, Powell is purely playing himself.
“I’ve been a fan of all Texas athletics my entire life, growing up in Austin. There’s a lot of college football towns, but there’s very few college football cities,” explained Powell, pointing to how large a city Austin is and it not having a professional sports team. “I’ve always lived and breathed Texas Longhorns. When I was a kid, Major Applewhite was one of my favorite quarterbacks. There was just something magical.”
Powell mentioned that he used to work as an usher at Texas football games when he was in high school. Oh yes, the guy who’s now a famous actor is very much legit when it comes to his Texas football fandom roots.
“I think what (head coach Steve Sarkisian) has done with the program is extraordinary,” Powell added.
