While there is still time before a firm decision has to be made, the clock is certainly ticking down in terms of a deadline for deciding if the 2020 college football season can be played on time.
According to Alabama AD Greg Byrne, we’ll know if the season will be played as scheduled by the end of June or start of July.
“I think when we get into late June and the first week of July, we’re gonna have to make some decisions,” Byrne said during a recent virtual town hall meeting according to AL.com. “Coach Saban and I have had a number of discussions about it: what do we need for the safety of our kids to be able to come back and be ready, be football ready at the SEC level?
“That’s four at the very minimum but very likely six weeks of preparation to get ready. And so how you pull that all together when that to comes mid-July to late-July, we’re gonna have to have some decisions made on what that looks like.”
That’s nearly the same time 2020 SEC Media Days is scheduled to take place in Atlanta, which league commissioner Greg Sankey has noted he would like to occur only if it’s in the lead up to the start of the season.
So if you are looking for clues as to whether the start of the season will happen on time, pay close attention to what the league decides to do with 2020 SEC Media Days.
