Greg Byrne and Alabama gave Kalen DeBoer their full backing in April, in the form of a contract extension that keeps the Crimson Tide head coach in the fold through the 2032 season.
The pressure was always going to be on DeBoer, given that he was taking over for the legendary Nick Saban. After a 9-4 record in 2024, Alabama returned to the College Football Playoff in 2025 and beat Oklahoma in the first round before a loss to eventual champion Indiana in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal.

That opened the door to DeBoer’s extension.
“When you have a coach that you believe in like we believe in coach DeBoer, you want to have stability in that,” Byrne said, according to AL.com. “You will have a lot of really good times and youโll also have challenging times. Everybody is going to face that as our world has changed. Our extension with coach DeBoer showed our commitment and belief in him.”

The Alabama AD deemed any discussion of changing coaches every couple of years “absolutely ludicrous.” Those words certainly ring relevant after Brian Kelly didn’t even last four seasons at LSU after no CFP appearances.
“We really value stability at Alabama,” Byrne said. “That’s been the case with Coach Saban, obviously, forever. We want that stability to continue with Coach DeBoer.”
