Greg McElroy considers Florida’s ceiling if DJ Lagway plays like Heisman contender
Greg McElroy recently delved into a hypothetical regarding Florida’s season, as the ESPN analyst pondered what the Gators’ 2025 ceiling could be if quarterback DJ Lagway lived up to the Heisman hype that some fans are giving him.
Posing the question “What if DJ Lagway has a Heisman Trophy-level season?,” McElroy expresses how entertaining that reality would be given the strength of Florida’s schedule. The former Alabama quarterback mentions how many potential ‘Heisman moments’ are on the slate, with games against LSU, Miami, Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee being just a few of those opportunities.
McElroy also emphasized how strong the rest of the Gator roster is, leading into his final point of how Lagway is the key to a breakthrough campaign in Gainesville.
“We know that Florida will be rugged and really, really committed to running the football with their offensive line that returns intact. And we know they can pound it with Jaden Baugh, Ja’Kobi Jackson and Treyaun Webb.” McElroy said. “If Lagway turns in a Heisman Trophy-level season, Florida can contend for and win a national championship.”
A former highly touted high school prospect, Lagway stepped in for the injured Graham Mertz last season and tallied 1,915 passing yards, 101 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
Lagway and the Gators open the 2025 season against Long Island, but games against South Florida, LSU and Miami follow with no bye weeks.
