The Sooners looked great in their 24-13 home win against the Michigan Wolverines. It was their first big test, and they passed it with flying colors. The defense looked strong, and John Mateer cemented himself as an early Heisman Trophy frontrunner.

It has also led some in the media, like Greg McElroy, to say that Oklahoma is back.

McElroy shared 10 takeaways from this past week in college football during his Monday show, ‘Always College Football.’ His first one of the episode was that Oklahoma was back, coming off a massive victory, which he thinks is now the biggest win of the 4-year tenure of Brent Venables.

“Takeaway No. 1 – Oklahoma is back, folks,” McElroy stated. “Oklahoma is back, ladies and gentlemen.

“The only matchup this past weekend featured two ranked teams. Oklahoma wins the game, 24-13, over Michigan in what was a physical game that just felt like a playoff setting, didn’t it? Just two heavyweights going toe to toe.”

McElroy’s high rating on the Sooners was due to their defense. They held Michigan to 288 total yards and an average of 3.7 yards per play. Venables is a defensive guru, and even though a true freshman led the Wolverines, it is still impressive given Michigan’s talent.

The game also cemented John Mateer as one of the best players in the country and an early Heisman candidate after accounting for 3 touchdowns, 344 total yards, and an interception.

“This was a game that was won because of the defensive approach and the physicality across the board,” McElroy said.
