The Alabama Crimson Tide lost their season opener against Florida State, 31-17, on Saturday afternoon.
It was Ty Simpson’s first game as a starter for Alabama, and he completed 23-of-43 passes for 254 yards and 2 touchdowns with no turnovers. However, since Kalen DeBoer has taken over for legendary coach Nick Saban, questions have been asked about Alabama’s effort level.
Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy saw the same thing from the Tide this weekend and said this on Jox 94.5 on Monday morning.
“If you try and pin that performance on Ty, you don’t know ball,” McElroy said. “There’s a lot of guys on this team, man, that just didn’t give max effort, and they only have themselves to blame.”
McElroy didn’t stop there. He continued on Jox 94.5 and said this:
“I don’t know why they were fatigued or why they were a step slow, or what the circumstances were, but the players need to look themselves in the mirror after that performance because there were a lot of moments where it just wasn’t where it needs to be from an effort standpoint,” McElroy said.
McElroy is a BCS National Champion with the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2010, where they knocked off undefeated Texas in the Rose Bowl.
Alabama’s next chance to improve on its effort will be on Sept. 6 as it takes on LA-Monroe at home at 7:45 p.m. ET.
