Greg McElroy called Vanderbilt the top “giant killer” in college football this season on his weekly podcast. The ESPN analyst is taking the Commodores to beat LSU in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
On his podcast this week, McElroy gave picks for some of the biggest games around college football. At the end of the show, he gave a brief pick in the Vandy-LSU game.
“Surprise, surprise, I am taking Vanderbilt over LSU,” McElroy said. “Vanderbilt’s got a super mobile quarterback. LSU has yet to solve (its) problems as it relates to [the] quarterback run game. I don’t think they get right in this situation. Vanderbilt continues to climb as the No. 1 giant killer in the country.”
Vanderbilt (6-4) is already eligible for a bowl game — what will be its first postseason appearance since 2018. The Commodores also have their most conference wins in a season since 2018. A win over the Tigers on Saturday would set a new high-water mark for regular-season wins and SEC wins in a season since 2013.
And the ‘Dores should come in with a fair bit of confidence they can get the job done. It’s not just the Alabama win. Vandy took Missouri to overtime on the road, beat Kentucky on the road, beat Auburn on the road, and lost by just 3 against Texas.
Vandy is 7-3 against the spread this season while LSU is just 3-7.
The Tigers have lost 3 straight as mobile quarterbacks have set about the unraveling of a once-promising year. Marcel Reed changed the game when he entered for Texas A&M and then Jalen Milroe ran for 185 yards on the Tiger defense in a 42-13 Alabama win. Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia should be well-rested and ready to roll off a bye.
Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network. LSU is a 7.5-point favorite at bet365.
