Greg McElroy is a big part of ESPN’s college football coverage, doing everything from broadcasting games to hosting sports talk shows.
During a talking point on his Always College Football show, McElroy was talking about who the best players are in college football.
While many people may expect McElroy to go with a quarterback based on his playing career, it was Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty that is at the top of his list.
"Ashton Jeanty is the best player right now, pound for pound, in the sport."

“Ashtony Jeanty right now is the best player pound-for-pound in the sport,” McElroy said. “Through 5 games, he is already over 1,000 yards and is on pace for 2,700 yards. He might even flirt with 3,000 yards. The guy is just absolutely ridiculous. Usually if you’re a running back and you go for over 2,000, then you are right there in the Heisman mix. If he goes well beyond 2,000 yards, it is a very real possibility he could bring home the most coveted award in the sport.”
The odds back up McElroy’s assessment. Jeanty is currently the betting favorite with bet365 listing the Boise State star at +225 after Jalen Milroe and Alabama lost to Vanderbilt. Colorado two-way phenom Travis Hunter is 2nd in those odds at +350 and be sure to use SDS’s real money betting apps to get in on the action.
In Saturday night’s 62-30 win against Utah State, Jeanty finished with 13 carries for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns. All of those numbers were in the first half, which isn’t the first time he played just the first half.
Through 5 games, he has carried the ball 95 times for 1,031 yards and 16 touchdowns.
