Greg McElroy has updated his top 4 SEC teams ahead of Week 3.
The former Alabama quarterback and current host of Always College Football on ESPN ranks the top teams each week on his show. After a wild Week 2, McElroy revealed his top 4 teams in the Power 4 conferences ahead of the Week 3 action.
When it came to the SEC, McElroy’s ordering of the teams may surprise some people. McElroy has Georgia at No. 1 and Texas at No. 2, with Tennessee leaping ahead of Alabama to claim the 3rd spot. Alabama was given the 4th spot in McElroy’s rankings.
“Really like what I see from Tennessee’s defense,” McElroy explained. “Now, offense? A bit of a work in progress, but they have the personnel and pieces to make life a little bit easier for Nico Iamaleava. I’m putting Tennessee at No. 3 fresh off their beat down of NC State.”
Josh Heupel and the Vols picked up a dominant win over a quality opponent in NC State in Week 2, winning 51-10 in Charlotte.
McElroy chose Alabama for the No. 4 spot because the team ” showed growth” by running away from South Florida near the end of their Week 2 matchup. The former QB also gave the Tide the edge of Missouri and Ole Miss due to neither of those teams playing a quality opponent yet.
“Ole Miss hasn’t played anybody. Missouri hasn’t played anybody,” McElroy declared. “We will reassess what they do next week after they’re tested for the first time against Power 5 competition.”
Ole Miss takes on Wake Forest in Week 3 while Mizzou takes on No. 24 Boston College.
