Greg McElroy weighs Texas’ national championship chances

Greg McElroy thinks Texas could be back and be in a good position to compete for a national title.

The Longhorns have to beat Washington in the Sugar Bowl to even have a chance at that first. However, McElroy noted how stacked Texas is at multiple positions on offense and defense. If Steve Sarkisian can coach Texas to a win on New Year’s Day, the Longhorns would punch their ticket to their 1st national title game since the 2010 BCS Championship.

McElroy explained how Texas is built to compete for championships. He compared Texas to how Alabama and Michigan are built, with the offensive and defensive lines as the foundation.

“Top to bottom, front 7 seven defensively, elite. Back end, occasional liabilities, but you heard Steve Sarkisian reference it, a lot of the yardage given up is circumstantial,” said McElroy on Tuesday’s edition of Always College Football. “Meaning it’s throw-a-thon for the opposing team because they’re in a big hole, so maybe those numbers are a little bit inflated. This is an excellent group that is extremely well built from the inside out. They’re built like Bama, Michigan, built like the best teams in college football. They are built with the offensive and defensive lines in mind, and they get better and better as the wideouts and company get better.”

Kickoff from the Superdome in New Orleans will be 8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN.
