Barring complete chaos across the college football landscape this weekend, many think Georgia will miss out on the College Football Playoff with a loss to Alabama in Saturday’s SEC championship game.
Greg Sankey isn’t among them.
While speaking to reporters Friday, the SEC commissioner said he believes the No. 4 Bulldogs could still sneak into the CFP even if they lose to the Crimson Tide.
SEC commish Greg Sankey: “I actually think there’s still an argument that Georgia is one of the four best teams even with two losses.” Said it would “merit discussion.”

That result would assure No. 1 Alabama a spot in the CFP, and it’s widely presumed that No. 3 Notre Dame has already secured a spot by virtue of its undefeated regular season. With No. 2 Clemson a near-lock to also go undefeated and win the ACC championship against five-loss Pittsburgh, that leaves fellow one-loss teams Oklahoma and Ohio State jostling with Georgia for the final spot.
That’s not even accounting for No. 8 UCF, which can extend its winning streak to 25 games against Memphis in the AAC title game.
But Sankey doesn’t believe the Bulldogs’ CFP chances look as bleak as they appear. He’s naturally going to stump for one of his schools, but there is a case to be made because Georgia’s only losses would be against the nation’s top-ranked team and No. 10 LSU.
It’s an interesting thought experiment for now, but we’ll find out Saturday if the debate will even be needed.
