Greg Sankey issues statement on decision to postpone Sugar Bowl to Thursday
Greg Sankey released a statement on behalf of the SEC on Wednesday afternoon in the aftermath of the suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans that killed at least 10 and injured dozens of others.
The SEC commissioner was in lock step with the decision to postpone Wednesday night’s College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame. The game, originally scheduled to kick off at 8:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday night from the Superdome, will now begin 24 hours later at 8:45 p.m. ET on Thursday night.
Sankey released a statement that read:
The decision to postpone tonight’s Sugar Bowl was made in the best interest of public safety.
“Lives were tragically lost last night and we are appreciative that public officials and law enforcement agencies continue to work with great diligence to ensure the safety of the New Orleans community.
The Georgia football team is on “lockdown” at its team hotel in New Orleans in the aftermath of the tragedy, according to a report by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge during an appearance on ABC News on Wednesday afternoon.
Georgia has issued multiple statements, including one assuring that all members of its athletic department travel party at the Sugar Bowl are safe and have been accounted for. Georgia President Jere W. Morehead also announced that a Georgia student was injured in the attack.
