Greg Sankey has kept a pulse on expansion talks and moves around the college sports landscape, and on Wednesday he updated reporters on where the SEC stands to date.

Sankey, the SEC commissioner, said he’s not focused on expanding the SEC at this time.

“I’m not a recruiter. We’re focused on our growth to 16,” he said. “… We think we’re really well-positioned. Moving to 16 is our focus, but I won’t predict what others will do.”

Oklahoma and Texas are still slated to join the SEC officially in July 2025, but further expansion could depend on other conferences such as the Big Ten, and Pac-12, which is the final Power 5 conference to negotiate a media rights deal.

Notre Dame could be a major move that could force the SEC to change its stance if it joined the Big Ten and if that conference went to 20 teams by adding Pac-12 and/or ACC schools.

Until then, the SEC is likely to stand pat on expansion discussions.
