Greg Sankey reacts to NCAA’s decision to cancel fall championships

Earlier Thursday, NCAA president Mark Emmert announced that championships in fall sports have been canceled due to COVID-19.
It’s important to remember that college football bowl games and the College Football Playoff operate outside of the NCAA; so, the NCAA’s announcement essentially affects every sport except football.
“We cannot, at this point, have fall NCAA championships,” Emmert said on a video released from the NCAA’s Twitter account.
This means that men’s and women’s sports can play this fall, but they won’t have championships this fall sponsored by the NCAA.
Following the NCAA’s announcement, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement on the matter.
“Our soccer, volleyball and cross-country student-athletes are working hard to prepare for their seasons and they have been diligent in taking personal health precautions and following protocols around COVID-19,” Sankey said. “We will support them in every way possible as we evaluate the impact of these cancellations on their fall sports seasons.”
