For many college football fans, the season officially starts when SEC Media Days gets rolling in Hoover, or in this case, Atlanta.

The league held its 2018 SEC Media Days in Atlanta after holding the annual event in Hoover dating back to 2001 and had planned on returning the event to Atlanta in 2020 but those plans may have to change due to the coronavirus.

An official decision has not yet been made but with leagues across the country announcing their annual preseason events are moving away from physical locations and toward the virtual realm, there is growing concern that the 2020 SEC Media Days may suffer the same fate.

Of course, no league has a media day event anywhere near the scale of the SEC’s. Taking that into consideration, it won’t be a total surprise if the nation’s most popular football conference is the only league to hold Media Days in 2020.

According to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who recently sat down for an interview with Zach Klein, the sports director for WSB-TV 6 in Atlanta, the league is still trying to work out a way to hold 2020 SEC Media Days at the College Football Hall of Fame.

Here’s how Sankey responded when asked if the SEC is still planning on holding the event in Atlanta.

“Yeah, as of today, we obviously have to go into contingency planning mode and we started that back in April with our staff,” Sankey answered. “Our focus is on — I would love to have Media Days in person, so we want to focus on being prepared. And like anything else, we’re going to have to adjust out of that.

“Being in the College Football Hall of Fame is special for us. Atlanta is a place where a couple of years ago we began our season with Media Days and ended with our championship, we had that great all-SEC national championship game. And so it’s a special place for us.”
